Sauna FAQ

In Scandinavian countries, saunas are more than an occasional pleasure; they are an everyday part of a healthy lifestyle. And for good reason. Perspiration, together with elevated cardiovascular blood flow, is nature’s way of cleansing your system. The Barrel Sauna offer you these benefits, and many others, in the comfort of your home.

What exactly is a sauna?
A sauna is an insulated room built of softwood, with an electric heater capable of heating the room to about 180° F. The sauna is a dry heat, as opposed to the near 100% humidity of a steam room.

How do you take a sauna?
Most people relax in their heated sauna with a towel wrap for approximately 5-10 minute, then take a cool shower, returning to the sauna to repeat the cycle two or three times. These are general guidelines; beginners should work up to the 10-minute period, while experienced sauna bathers may stay in the sauna for longer times.

Why is there a bucket of water in the sauna?
A wooden bucket filled with fresh water and a ladle allow you to control the amount of humidity in your sauna by occasionally sprinkling water over the rocks in the heater, releasing a burst of steam into the sauna, known as Löyly. The Löyly increases perspiration and cleansing of the pores. Try it; you’ll like it!

What is unique about our Barrel Sauna?
The saunas are milled from solid 1 1/2” clear, kiln dried, Western Red Cedar heartwood. In addition to its natural long lasting beauty, Western Red Cedar is a soft wood that “breathes,” absorbing humidity (not heat) for a drier atmosphere and more comfortable surface to lean against.

What type of heater is used?
The best. The Barrel Sauna features heaters and components from one of the leading sauna heater manufacturers in the world, Saunatec® of Finland. Saunatec heaters have triple wall construction that lowers the outer surface temperature while delivering a penetrating heat that soothes and relaxes.

Where can I install my sauna?
The Barrel Saunas is available for indoor or outdoor use; all you need is a flat washable surface and electrical power. Popular locations include exercise or recreation rooms, shower area, basement, garage, patio or pool deck.

Health Benefits of Sauna Bathing

1. You Deserve It
First and foremost, your sauna experience is simply a much needed, and well deserved, respite from the stress of life. Whether you choose to relax with family and friends or enjoy your solitude, your sauna provides mental and physical rejuvenation and an overall feeling of well being.

2. Cardiovascular Improvement
Your body responds to the sauna’s dry heat by increasing blood circulation and perspiration, the same natural cooling mechanism used in exercise. A 10 minute sauna requires an elevated heart rate and cardiac output, and also metabolic rate, all contributing to cardiac fitness.

3. A Healthy Glow
Sauna bathing helps improve your skin tone by stimulating your epidermis, opening pores and increasing circulation near the skin’s surface. You gain that youthful, just-returned-from-vacation look.

4. Take Off The Weight and Keep It Off
Studies show that a person can burn 300 - 400 calories during a 20 to 30 minute sauna. That’s the equivalent of aerobic exercise, such as jogging or rowing, for the same period.

5. Eliminate Harmful Toxins
Your sweat glands eliminate a surprising amount of harmful toxins, as well as traces of alcohol, nicotine and cholesterol flowing through your bloodstream.

6. Increase Your Resistance To Disease
By increasing your circulation and oxygen flow - together with improving your overall level of wellness - the dry sauna heat helps your body strengthen its immune system required to fight colds, congestion and infection.

7. Post-Exercise Relaxation
Sauna bathing assures higher circulation and more oxygen delivered to aching muscles, helping loosen up tight muscles for greater relaxation and faster recuperation.

8. Relief of Arthritic Pain
Just what the doctor ordered. A dry, warm climate is what doctors prefer for those patients suffering from arthritic or stiff, painful joints.

9. Restful Sleep
The soothing effects of sauna bathing, followed by a cold shower, help promote a deep, restful sleep.
